Vigan is the capital city of Ilocos Sur, founded by a Spanish conquistador, Juan De Salcedo. Its old name was “Villa Fernandina de Vigan,” and it was shortened into “Vigan,” which is derived from the Chinese words “Bee” and “Gan,” which means “Beautiful Shore. This city is known for its well-preserved Spanish Colonial Town, like the old buildings that are mainly made of bricks and their beautiful roads that are made from cobblestone.

In January 2001, Vigan converted from a municipality to a city by the Republic Act No. 8988, which was signed by the former president Joseph Estrada. Vigan started celebrating their cityhood day, followed by the Vigan Fiesta, which is celebrated in honor of their patron, St. Paul the Apostle. Vigan’s beauty was recognized and earned a title in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ever since Vigan was converted into a city, the economic growth became rapid. It attracted many tourists not only from inside the Philippines but also from foreign countries. Vigan was able to maintain the uniqueness of their culture and history.

It is unbelievable that until now, Vigan remained the same over the past few years. It continues to preserve their culture by enhancing their historical buildings and roads and the continuous celebrations of festivals like their famous Longganisa Festival. Vigan plays a significant role in understanding the past of our country. And its transformation has changed the lives of many bigueno’s.
